Summer Art Classes for Youth

Heroes & Monsters of Celtic Myth with Kiri Guyaz
Mon., July 19, 1:30-3:30pm; Ages 9+; Fee: $20
Learn about fierce warriors, beautiful goddesses, ancient trees, swordswomen, bards, huntresses, the Sidhe faery folk, and a myriad of heroes from the misty dawn of Celtic legends. Then we will each choose a favorite female, male, or mythical creature and, basing it on Celtic symbolism, use a variety of mixed media to create our own portraits of the heroes of ancient legend!

Tessellations with Ann Rhinehardt
Tues., July 20, 10am-12pm; Ages 9-14; Fee: $20
Tessellations are repeating shapes or patterns that do not overlap or have spaces in between them. M.C. Escher specialized in creating tessellations. After looking at some tessellations and studying some ways to make them, students will design their own, working in pencil and colored pencil. This will be a fun and challenging class!

Treasure Maps with Kiri Guyaz
Wed., July 21, 1:30-3:30pm; Ages 9+; Fee: $20
Welcome to the undiscovered country of you! Bring a photo of yourself that you can add to your artwork. With maps as starting points and using and a variety of mixed media, colors and pictures, we will chart the land (or island) that is you—identifying the magical places, hidden gifts and more within you—a treasure map collage showing who you are and where you want to go!

Multi Dimensional Painting with Ann Rhinehardt
Thurs., July 22, 10am-12pm; Ages 6-14; Fee: $20, plus $2 materials fee
Students will explore a different way of painting by joining multiple panels after they have been individually painted with acrylic paints. They will select 4 or 5 different shapes and sizes of foam core for their work and then paint each one. They may choose to plan a cohesive painting or paint each panel with its own theme and combine them for a completely different effect. This class will be lots of fun...imagination at its best!

“Green-Man” Leaf Faces with Kiri Guyaz
Wed., July 21, 10am-12pm; Ages 9+; Fee: $20
The “Green-Man” (or woman) was an ancient symbol of the growing power of nature and of the wilderness, given a human face. The masklike features constructed out of leaves, grasses and flowers often guarded the way to paths, gardens, homes and more. Come use a variety of leaf types, studying the fitting together of different shapes, and shades of color and texture to create your own face.

Sunsets at the Beach with Heidi Pomerleau
Mon., August 2, 10am-12pm, Ages 6-14; Fee: $20
Come and join us at the beach! In the studio, listening to beach music, students will be creating a “Sunset at the Beach.” They will paint the background with bright sunset colors, and use paint scrapers to create the texture of the surf. Then using collage, students will create what's happening on their beach. Bring scrapbook paper if you would like. Paper will be provided.

Weathered Barn Painting with Ann Rhinehardt
Tues., August 3, 10am-12pm
Ages 6-14; Fee: $20, plus $2 materials fee
In this class, students will design a composition with an old barn as the focus. They will then learn different techniques using sandpaper and petroleum jelly to layer paint so that gives the impression of a peeling surface. Color theory, composition, perspective and texture use will be discussed. Join us and learn some unconventional techniques!

Clay Vehicles with Heidi Pomerleau
Thurs., August 5, 10am-12pm
Ages 6-14; Fee: $25
Students will create a sculptural form of a vehicle, thinking of design and details and using a variety of clay techniques, additive and subtractive methods, as well as glazing applications. Students will be using subtractive methods for hollowing out the form. The form could be functional, as a vessel, for example a truck bed could hold candy, or the form could be purely decorative.

Kids' Pottery Workshops
Sat., August 7*, and Sat., August 14*, 10am-12pm; Ages 6-15; Fee: $25

All levels welcome for these 2-hour beginning workshops. Learn to throw clay on the wheel. All work will be fired and ready for pick-up two weeks later. * These are two stand alone classes.

Young Artists at the River: Site-Specific Movement and Art Installation & Performance with Jeni Frazee and Tricia Moran
Tues., August 17, 12-4pm, with a special performance at 3:45pm (Rain date: 8/18); Ages 7-15; Fee: $30
In dance and visual art, young artists will explore our connection to nature and land by creating a site-inspired, site-specific performance/exhibit at the Waterville Riverfront. The project will use two different art forms (dance and watercolor painting) to explore and express the beautiful natural site of the Kennebec River. Students will create movement inspired by current site-specific modern dance, drawing inspiration from contemporary works such as Luminescent Flights by Project Bandaloop. The performance will also feature many small watercolor paintings created by the young artists, installed in the site as part of the performance and sent home with the audience as gifts as they leave the performance.
