Awaken your creative dreams, especially if you've put watercolors aside for a while! This class will build onto skills from the beginning level class and go deeper. Please purchase supplies before first class; supply list available at www.freshwaterarts.org.

Carving a Wood Spirit in Cottonwood Bark with Marcia Berkall
Saturday, October 24, 9:00am-5:00pm
Adults; Class fee: $53 (includes one piece of bark per student)
This course will cover basic face carving techniques. We'll first carve a practice block to learn facial proportions. We'll then use that practice carving as a guide for the bark carving. We'll spend time on each feature, learning techniques to make each more realistic and easier to carve. Carving safety will be stressed, along with some discussion on sharpening. Students should bring their own carving tools including a carving knife and various gouges if you have them. If you don't have gouges, you will learn to carve a face with the tools that you do have. Beginners will be “encouraged” to wear carving gloves.

Brayer Painting: Harvest Moon with Cathy Lacombe
Monday, October 26, 6:00-8:00pm
Adults & Youth Ages 14+; Class fee: $35 (includes $10 material fee)
Great for beginning painters, brayer painting is a fun way to explore loose contemporary painting, color mixing, and layering. Pieces will focus on the moon and an implied or faint hint of a landscape, resulting in a contemporary acrylic painting on size 18”x24” canvas board.

Amber Glow of Fall Leaves with Cathy Lacombe
Monday, November 2, 6:00-8:00pm
Adults; Class fee: $25
Students will create an 8”x8” loose rendition of a leaf in watercolor.  We will capture the sunlight with our painting technique and add texture and interest with just a hint of hand stitching or embroidered detail and sewn seed beads.

Atmospheric Painting with Ann Rhinehardt
Monday, November 2, 3:30-5:30pm

Working with acrylic paints, students will create a value underpainting with black, white and grays. They will then add multiple layers of color to create a sense of depth and movement. Join us to make your perfect storm, foggy morning or blizzard!

Soap Carving with Marcia Berkall
Saturday, November 7, 10:00am-12:00pm
At one time soap carving was considered to be serious art with sculptures often used in advertising. Soap is a wonderful medium for children since it requires no sharp-edges tools. Children will learn how to make a pattern, transfer it onto the soap and carve it. Since the ability to perceive three dimensions is typically not developed until around the age of nine, there will be a minimum age of nine.

Papercraft Elegant Cards with Kiri Guyaz
Monday, November 9, 3:30-5:30pm
Get creative with unique handmade cards that can be framed in a shadow box or used as gifts, and get a jump on the holiday season! Using a variety of papercrafts: kirigami, snowflake cutting, collage techniques and more, we will construct distinctive card-art. Some materials available, but please bring some of your own favorites also, including any: photos, calendar pictures, actual artwork you don't mind cutting up, colored cardstock, tissue paper, elegant wrapping paper, etc.

Apple Still Life with Colored Pencils with Ami Newell
Wednesday, November 18, 3:30-5:30pm
This class will offer an opportunity to learn perspective while designing the layout of a still life. Students will also learn blending techniques using colored pencils on black paper, making the colors of their drawings even more vibrant! The use of light and shadow will also be explored.

Painting on Embossed Metal with Ann Rhinehardt
Monday, October 19, 3:30-5:30pm
Do metallic surfaces intrigue you? In this class we will explore the technique of embossing with heavy foil by using a variety of tools to create a design using symbols, patterns and textures. Students will be able to work realistically or abstractly. When satisfied with their design, students will then paint with transparent layers of acrylic. Finally, the designs will be completed with some areas of opaque acrylics to add contrast. Come and experiment with a new medium!

Inuit Animal Carving with Ann Rhinehardt
Tuesday, October 20 & Wednesday, October 21, 3:30–5:30pm
* Class fee: $40 (two-part class)
The Inuit are known for their simple stone sculptures of animals. We will study some of their work and then design our own sculptures. Working with clay, students will make a model of their design, sculpting “additively” to help them see more three-dimensionally. They will then “subtractively” carve “soft stone” with simple tools (nails, spoons, etc.). This soft stone is made of vermiculite and plaster. Students will learn how to translate their two-dimensional idea into and three-dimensional creation. PLEASE NOTE: This is a two session class!

Paint the Fire of Autumn Leaves with Kiri Guyaz
Thursday, October 22, 3:30-5:30pm
The trees light up like flames in fall—please gather some of those bright leaves, save in a Ziploc bag in the fridge, then bring them to class! We will learn some simple yet gorgeous techniques for capturing the fiery colors of autumn leaves in watercolor, and celebrate the season in some glowing paintings!

Halloween Painted Stones with Kiri Guyaz
Monday, October 26, 3:30-5:30pm
Make your own decorations that will last more than one year! Hunt for and collect different-shaped smooth rocks in your yard--long, slender rocks for ghosts, oval shapes for spiders, and any rounded rock for pumpkins—old seastones are perfect! Some stones will be made available, but bring any of your stones to class! We will design faces, shapes, and creatures to paint on them!

The Spirit of Trees with Ann Rhinehardt
Tuesday, October 27, 3:30-5:30pm
Trees each have a personality and characteristics all their own. Many of us don't take the time to look closely at the uniqueness of each tree. Using photographs of old trees, focusing on the trunks, students will imagine fairies, gnomes or other wood spirits emerging from the bark. They will draw their imagined tree spirits with pen and ink, using lots of texture and detail. When their drawings are dry, they will add color to them with watercolor paints. We will talk about some of the different types of trees in Maine. Students are encouraged to bring their own photos.

Recyclable Art with Kim Brennan
Thursday, October 29, 3:30-5:30pm
With recyclable items, paint and glue we will make rocket ships, trains, or anything from your imagination! Come explore the art of using found items to make art like so many contemporary artists have done in the past. All levels are welcome.

Rhythm Drawings with Kim Brennan
Thursday, November 5, 3:30-5:30pm
Do you like music? In this class we will draw to the rhythms of different music and then cut out images from those drawings to create a work of art! We will look at Alex Katz's collages to get inspiration and then use a little imagination to create a unique collage of your own. All levels welcome.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles with Heidi Pomerleau
Monday, November 16, 3:30-5:30pm
