Classes and Events for Adults & Teens
Woodcarving Basics with Marcia Berkall
Tuesday evenings, July 7, 14, 21, 28 and August 4, 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Class fee: $100
Learn the basics of carving with a knife. Subjects covered will include carving safety, sharpening, and basic cuts. Students will work on a practice piece before carving an in-the-round snowman.
Creative Writing Workshop with Caroline King
Wednesday evenings, July 8, 15, 22, 29, 5:30-8:30pm
Class fee: $100
This class will introduce adults to a variety of forms of creative writing and can serve as a great beginning to writing your story in either a fiction or non-fiction format. The class will help you to plan, write, and edit a creative piece during the four sessions.
For the Love of Trees with Kit Munroe-Myers
Tuesday evenings, July 14 and 21, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Class fee: $50
Learn to create life-like trees with acrylic on canvas. This session will explore trees, native to Maine, in all seasons. Learn techniques to make your trees come alive. Students will have a finished landscape at the end o f these two classes.
Watercolor World with Kiri Guyaz
Monday evenings, July 20, 27 and Aug. 3, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Class fee: $75
Unleash your creativity and excavate hidden talents! Learn and polish a variety of techniques and tips on wet-into-wet, salt blooms, backwashes, lifting out, spattering, masking, blades, glazing, dry brush, and more. All levels of expertise welcome. Please bring your own supplies (see supply list).
Learn from the Masters with Kit Munroe-Myers
Thursday evenings, July 30 and August 6, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Class fee: $50
Two classes will show you a few secrets from some of the master painters with ties to Maine, such as Rockwell Kent, Marsden Hartley, and Marguerite Zorach. Learn by doing – copy some of their techniques, and ultimately add to your palette of skills. They would be honored!
Poetry Writing Workshop with Caroline King
Saturday, July 25, 9:00am-3:00pm
Class fee: $60
This introductory class is designed to welcome the new or experienced poet and will feature a balance of instruction, writing exercises and feedback. Participants will have the opportunity to expand their poetic voice with new ideas, poetic starts and inspiration.
Learning to Draw the Natural Way with Dave Peloquin
Saturday, August 8, 10:00am-2:00pm
Class fee: $50
Learning to draw is really a matter of learning to see. Through deep observation and natural drawing techniques, students will find the confidence to approach any subject they wish to draw: landscape, figure, portrait or still life. We will work primarily with pencil. All are welcome. No previous experience necessary.

SPECIAL PHOTO SAFARI WORKSHOPS FOR YOUTH & TEENS
Photo Safari I with Cathy Lacombe
Saturday, July 11, 10am-12pm; Class fee: $20
We will be looking at many examples of art photos in books as we study particular design concepts. Then, we will take to the streets with our cameras for an art adventure, searching Main Street to see how many design concepts we can capture. Developed photos and final project (one mounted 8”x10” photo—teacher's choice) can be picked up the week after class. Please buy 1 disposable camera prior to class.
Photo Safari II/Painting with Cathy Lacombe
Saturday, July 18, 10am-12pm; Class fee $20
Using the photos from Photo Safari I, students will compose a painting by combining images from several photos using “juxtaposition” or “opposites attract” as a design concept. Students will learn how to mix a harmonious palette with a complimentary color. Photos of Main Street will be provided for those students who haven't taken Photo Safari I.

Seastones in Watercolor with Kiri Guyaz
Monday, July 20
Seastones are one of the best of summer's delights, especially in Maine—smooth rounded stones glinting in the sun, shining with the waves. Students will learn about shapes, color, and a few simple watercolor techniques to paint their own section of seastone beach.
Pet Portraits with Kiri Guyaz
Tuesday, July 21
Many of us have beloved pets, favorite animals, or special memories of times shared with others' pets. Students are asked to bring in a photo of their family's pet or special animal. After discussion of why animals are so important and sharing a little about their pet, students will select from various media to create their own unique vision of their pet/animal based on the photograph with the name and a favorite memory described.
Worlds of Science Fiction & Fantasy with Kiri Guyaz
Wednesday, July 22
Perhaps unseen worlds exists alongside ours—other times, other worlds, magical or mysterious. Science fiction and fantasy authors explore such realms in detail in their books. What kind of world can you imagine? Who are the heroes and the villains? Do they use magic or science? We will discuss different authors' works and worlds and create our own depictions of them, be it swords and dragons, faeries and spells, or distant worlds among the stars.
Starry Night with Heidi Pomerleau
Thursday, July 23
Students will discuss Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night as well as some other nocturnal scenes. Students will proceed to creating their own version of a “starry night”, using acrylics to build up the texture. There will be a variety of photos, including light houses, to paint from. If you have a photo in mind, please feel free to bring it in.
Exploring Life in the Coral Reef with Heidi Pomerleau
Friday, July 24
Create a sculpture of the coral reef. Have you ever wanted to go snorkeling and explore the coral reef with all the bright vibrant colors of the fish and plant life? During this class you will sculpt the floor of the coral reef using a variety of sculpting materials. The fish and creatures of the reef will be sculpted out of polymer clay.

Calligraphy with Kiri Guyaz
Monday, July 20
Learn a little about the ancient practice of calligraphy and its origins around the world, and learn how it's not as hard as it looks. Please bring a favorite poem or verse to create in calligraphy.
Birches! Birches! Birches! with Pat Binette
Tuesday, July 21
Explore a fun way to make a lovely painting while learning about positive and negative shapes. Students will draw tree shapes from resource materials and will mask out positive shapes using masking tape. They will then paint the background using plastic wrap to create texture (negative space), pull off the tape and paint the birches!
The Shape of your Face with Kiri Guyaz
Wednesday, July 22
See yourself in fun new ways while learning about values & shapes! Please bring a photo of yourself; we will create a simple drawing that breaks the planes of the face/hair into geometric shapes. Then, from magazines, we will cut pieces of black, and white, into the shapes needed for your face, which we will assemble with glue onto both a black and a white background to create two different views of yourself. Poetry of the Self with Kiri Guyaz
Thursday, July 23
Words shape how we think of ourselves, who we are--what are the stories we tell about ourselves? Participants will create poetry as both an individual expression of self and as a collaborative journey. We will explore the telling, writing and defining, of our innermost selves, as well as the creation of the written/visual composition of the poems on paper. Discover your truth and tell it through poetry--the world needs your stories!
Let's Sketch Outside with Pat Binette
Friday, July 24
Students will go to the lovely park at Castonguay Square in Downtown Waterville. Using a view finder to compose their compositions, students will concentrate on parts of buildings - doorways, windows, etc. In the case of bad weather, students will sketch in the studio using objects brought by the instructor.

Pebble Painting with Heidi Pomerleau
Monday, July 27
Have you ever seen a pebble or a rock that made you think of something? It could have been in the shape of a dog laying down, or in the shape of a butterfly wing. You will be painting the rocks and putting them into a scene. What type of scene could you put the dog in? Laying on a bed, or in a living room laying in front of the warm fireplace. It's all up to you.
Bungle in the Jungle with Ann Rhinehardt
Tuesday, July 28
Come and explore the jungle world while creating a mixed media painting. We will look at the paintings of Henri Rousseau and then design our jungle scene with tropical foliage and animals. Working with a limited palette, students will use watercolor, ink, colored pencil and oil pastels to make their jungles come to life. Join us for a swinging time!
Printmaking with Everyday Items with Ann Rhinehardt
Wednesday, July 29
Beginning with a black background, students will use everyday objects to print images on their paper. They will then embellish their images using paints, pastels and colored pencils. Come with your imagination and play with some new techniques!
Eraser Prints with Sandy Stewart

It is amazing how the humble eraser, which was designed to make things vanish, can make things appear – and in such a fascinating way! It is also wonderful how one tiny detail can make a shape come to life!
Clay Houses with Kim Brennan
Friday, July 31
Have you ever made a model of a plane or house? In this class we will explore that tradition of model making but with clay! Using slabs of clay we will make clay houses, adding miniature trees and any details you can think off. We also will use inspiration from miniature train layouts. Pieces will be finished with glazes and ready for pick-up two weeks later.

Drawing People in Action with Heidi Pomerleau
Monday, July 27
Do you enjoy drawing the human form? Do you like to create movement in your work? The artist Keith Haring did both in his work. The students will be viewing Haring's work and brainstorming ideas on how to create work in his style. He used symbols to create his forms. So you don't have to worry about not being able to draw people. You will be able to do it this way!
Andy's World of Pop Art with Ann Rhinehardt
Tuesday, July 28
The Pop Art Movement began in the 1950's and artists, such as Andy Warhol, began making art using everyday images from the world they lived in. After looking at some examples of Pop Art, students will then choose a simple subject for their painting. Using acrylic paints, students will create their own Pop Art painting while exploring color theory. Join the fun of seeing the world like a Pop Artist!
Ceramic Masks with Heidi Pomerleau
Wednesday, July 29
Create a mask using clay, roll out a slab, build up facial features, press in textures to make symmetrical designs or carve some designs of your own. Masks have been created for centuries by many different cultures, come and join us and explore. To finish off your mask, add glazes to make the textures stand out.
Metal Tooling with Sandy Stewart
Thursday, July 30
Learn how to raise and stretch metal into a simple design by using a wooden stylus on a pad of newspaper to create hills and valleys. Paint will also be applied to your design to add more depth. Finish your project by turning your creation into a pin, a pendant or a magnet!
Pop Up Books with Kim Brennan
Friday, July 31
Pop up books used to be called moveable books and have been used for centuries. Some of the earliest examples were very elaborate! In this class we will create paper pop-ups/dioramas that will express something about you. Imagery from fairy tale forests, amusement parks and lands far away will be used to spur our imagination. We will finish them off with words and color.

CLAY CAMP FOR YOUTH & TEENS
August 3-7, daily, 10am-12pm, Ages 6-15
Class size limited
Class fee: $100 for the week!
Kim Brennan & Heidi Pomerleau
This week will be split between learning to throw on the wheel and hand building with clay. At the end of the week all pottery will be glazed and available for pick-up later. No experience needed. Return to top |
